Built in 1904 by James Hartness as a family home, the house is an example of Newport shingle and stone architecture, rarely found in this part of New England. Its architectural style and its historic background have caused it to be included in the National Register of Historic Places. Complementing the main building is a unique stone teahouse in the backyard. The inn sits on 35 wooded acres, 25 of which contain winding nature trails for you to follow, many along a mountain stream crossed by stone bridges. Surrounded by foliage, the gracious deck leads to a sparkling in-ground pool. On the front lawn to the left of the entrance can be seen the Hartness Equatorial Turret Telescope, built in 1910. It was one of the first tracking telescopes in America. They offer beverages and dining services on the deck. Also, picnic lunches are available for activities on and off the premises. On the grounds you can go swimming in a sparkling in-ground pool, exploring on 35 acres of meandering trails with flowing brooks and game playing (volleyball, horseshoes, croquet and badminton) and dining in the romantic award-winning fine dining restaurant. High-speed wireless B Internet service is now available in all Main House rooms and common areas.
